Auto Buzz (news news)

โ›ฝ Gas engine carbon free: Toyota is developing carbon capture engines as an EV alternative. They are doubling down on internal combustion by testing technology that sucks carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere as the car drives

๐Ÿšซ Ban on gas: Europe's automakers accept ban on gasoline cars by 2035. According to Renault CEO, fossil-fuel car ban by 2035 would be feasible if the right conditions are in place, which seem challenging.

๐Ÿฆบ Safety first: list of safest cars 24 released, Hyundai Motor Group won the most awards this year with 16 awards across its three brands: Genesis, Hyundai and Kia. Midsize luxury SUV class had the most award winners with 12 vehicles

๐Ÿ”ฅ Hot launch coming: McLaren Artura Spider will launch U.S. sales in May, they want to electrify sales with the launch of an open-top version. The work of art arrives as a 2025 model and price starts at $273k

๐Ÿค Loyalty in 24: GM and Tesla defended their top spots in the annual U.S. Automotive Loyalty Awards. Lincoln Nautilus earned a new award for Overall Loyalty to Model

On the Road Ahead (what is coming)

Have you started thinking about your next car? What will you look for? Well, I've been diving into some insights from a McKinsey survey, and it's clear we're on the brink of a connectivity revolution. By 2030, a whopping 90% of vehicles sold will be connected, a massive jump from 50% today. Isn't that something?

This isn't just about having the internet on the go. It's about reimagining what our cars can do for us. A survey asked over 1,600 drivers and the connectivity features were spread across categories like safety, security and infotainment. So, not only be able to call or listen to music.

So, what's your take on this? Are you all in for a car that keeps you connected at all times? Today I want to bring two examples that are already here, close to us:

๐Ÿš˜Volkswagen and ChatGPT Integration: Volkswagen unveiled the integration of ChatGPT into its IDA voice assistant. Now the system will not only control some car features, temperature, volume, location but also answer general knowledge questions, interact in intuitive language, and offer vehicle-specific information, all hands-free. Apparently ChatGPT would not have access to your information, but who knows for sureโ€ฆ

๐Ÿš—Mercedes-Benz and Amazon Music Experience: This partnership is about to change how we experience stories and music on the road. Imagine being enveloped in a multi-dimensional sound that doesn't just play music but places you right in the center of stories with exceptional clarity. The system would change your perception, putting you, the driver, in the center of the narrative. I know this is closer to todayโ€™s world innovation but the collaboration between these two companies could evolve to something else, maybe buying things directly from your car?

So, all of these innovations and changes to address what we want in the new cars brings us to a final thought for today, a concept that might be new for you: software-defined vehicles. Imagine your car improving over time, not through costly and time-consuming visits to the mechanic, but through software updates that add new features overnight. This concept means vehicles can adapt and evolve with technology already in place but considering user needs, offering new capabilities. It's basically your phone on wheels. Imagine you turn on your car and a new app is installed and will check if parts need maintenance or, now you need to do face recognition to be able to turn the car on โ€ฆ this could be a bit too much to be honest โ€ฆ but that is a reality that we are moving into.

As we look to the future, responding to what we want into the new cars, software-defined vehicles will probably be a new era where our cars become more than just a means of transportation; they become an integrated part of our digital lives. The potential for subscription-based services could transform how we experience our vehicles (potential topic for our next chat here), offering everything from advanced navigation aids to entertainment options on demand. So, we are definitely becoming more connected, the question now is: where do we draw the line?

In case you want to read more about the topic, here are some of the sources: McKinsey, VW, Mercedes, TechCrunch

Behind the Wheel: Making Sense of Gasoline, Hybrid, and Electric Cars

People constantly ask which type of car to buy, and the truth is, the answer isn't simple. Today's choices extend beyond models to the types of engines: gasoline, hybrid, and electric, each shaping your driving experience and costs differently. Gasoline cars, the old faithful, offer speed and variety but at the cost of higher maintenance and environmental impact. Electric vehicles (EVs) promise silence and savings with zero emissions, yet grapple with initial costs and charging challenges. Hybrids? They're the middle ground, merging efficiency with eco-consciousness, albeit at a premium.

How Much Will Your Choice Cost You?

What does owning each type really cost? Peering into the financials offers insights:

Type of Car

Avg. Initial Cost

Yearly Maintenance

Insurance

Yearly Fuel

5-Year Total

โ›ฝ Gas

$33k

$1,1k

$1,5k

$2,4k

$59k

$1,6k

$1,1k

$58k

๐Ÿ”Œ Electric

$66k

$0,9k

$2,2k

$0,9k

$88k

But here's the twist: the sticker prices for hybrids and electrics don't factor in juicy tax incentives that can slash costs significantly. And then there's depreciationโ€”a car's fiscal kryptonite. Predicting a 45% value drop for gasoline and hybrids, and a steeper 50-60% for electrics over 5 years, showcases the financial dynamics at play. Electrics suffer more from innovation's rapid pace, while hybrids clinch better value over time.

Who Should Drive What? Making the Choice

Choosing the right car type goes beyond mere preference; it's about matching the vehicle to your lifestyle, driving needs, and environmental considerations. Here's a quick guide:

  • Gasoline Vehicles: Suited for those prioritizing cost-efficiency upfront and who frequently travel long distances.

  • Hybrid Vehicles: Ideal for individuals looking to balance fuel efficiency with eco-friendliness, perfect for mixed urban and highway driving.

  • Electric Vehicles: Best for the environmentally conscious with ready access to charging, willing to invest in future-proof technology for a cleaner ride.

The comparison doesn't stop at ownership costs. Each vehicle type excels in different areas, from eco-friendliness to maintenance savings and model variety:

Deciding on your next vehicle is a journey of aligning financial, environmental, and lifestyle factors. As the automotive landscape evolves, so does the opportunity to choose a path that reflects your priorities. Whether drawn to traditional gasoline engines, the balanced approach of hybrids, or the forward-thinking electric option, there's a vehicle that resonates with every driver's aspirations.

The Unwritten Road: Essential Knows Before French Roads

Iโ€™m just back from France, and wow, do I miss the comfort of my Mustang, casually enjoying coffee and donuts with ample parking spaces around. France revealed a whole new worldโ€”mundane cars, chaotic Parisian streets, quirky parking habits, strict dining etiquettes, and more.

๐Ÿš™ A Different Kind of Prestige: Venturing into a prestigious French golf club, I was taken aback by the parking lot scene. Eighty percent of the vehicles were, for lack of a better word, mundane. None of the flashy, sexy cars that are a common sight back home. It became clear that in France, cars aren't necessarily seen as a status symbol or a reflection of wealth as they are in other places.

๐Ÿšง Parisian Roads, Where Chaos Meets Art: Navigating Paris, particularly the Arc de Triomphe roundabout, felt like a daring feat. With 12 avenues converging into a chaotic swirl of traffic and scant signage for guidance, it's an insurance nightmare. Interestingly, if you find yourself in a fender bender here, the norm is a 50/50 liability split, regardless of the circumstances.

๐Ÿ…ฟ๏ธ Bumper-to-Bumper Ballet: The casual acceptance of 'bumper' parking in France left me in awe. Navigating into a parking space is less about precision and more about perseverance. The practice of nudging into tight spots is less about aggression and more a shared urban struggle, reflecting a communal resilience in the face of parking scarcity.

๐Ÿฝ๏ธ From Michelin Stars to Steering Wheels: The French view cars merely as a means to an endโ€” getting to the next meal. Food holds such a revered place in their culture that it birthed the Michelin Guide in the 1920s, initially a tactic to encourage more car travel and tire sales. It's a fascinating intersection of automotive and culinary history that continues to influence dining and travel today.

๐Ÿšซ A Fine for Dining Behind the Wheel: Surprisingly, snacking in your car can attract fines up to 135 euros, highlighting the French commitment to preserving mealtime sanctity. This law paints a vivid picture of the cultural chasm between quick eats and the French dining ethos, where every meal is an occasion.

Pit Stop (recommendation for a fun time)

๐ŸŽฌ Full Throttle Movie: "Senna" offers a glimpse into Ayrton Senna's life, from his humble beginnings to becoming a Formula One legend. It captures his profound impact on racing and personal struggles, making it a compelling watch. This documentary transcends the sport, check it out on IMDb

๐ŸšฆNew Season Alert: Dive into the world of Formula 1 as the new season accelerates. For an immersive experience, catch all the high-speed highlights, driver insights, and thrilling race recaps on the Formula 1 YouTube Channel. It's your go-to source for everything F1. Gear up for a season of unparalleled excitement

๐ŸŽ๏ธ Racing Against Time - Season 6: Since we're on the topic of F1, buckle up because we couldn't possibly skip over Netflix's "Drive To Survive". This lap around, you're in for a sneak peek into the sport's high-octane drama, spotlighting Lewis Hamilton's candid reality check to Toto Wolff, "You can be here for 20 more years. I can't." Brace yourself for a mix of laughs, intensity, and the unfiltered world behind the podium.
